As the days grow longer and the hedgerows begin to burst into life, there’s no better time to explore the stunning coastal and countryside walks in and around Salcombe. With the fresh sea air, the scent of wild garlic, and the gentle hum of bees returning to the blossoms, spring is a magical time to pull on your walking boots and set off on an adventure. Here are a few of our favourite routes to enjoy at this time of year.

The Bolt Head Circular Walk

This is one of the most iconic walks in the area, offering breathtaking views over the rugged coastline. Starting from Salcombe, head towards South Sands and follow the South West Coast Path towards Bolt Head. The path winds its way along dramatic cliffs, with seabirds circling overhead and the occasional seal bobbing in the waves below. The route then loops back through sheltered woodlands and fields, often carpeted with bluebells in spring. It’s a moderately challenging walk but well worth the effort for the views alone.

The Gara Rock Walk

A walk that effortlessly combines coastal splendour with a rewarding destination, the trail to Gara Rock is always a firm favourite. Start in East Portlemouth and take the South West Coast Path eastwards, where you’ll be met with sweeping sea views and hidden coves. In spring, the cliffs are adorned with bright yellow gorse and delicate pink thrift, creating a stunning backdrop. The best part? A stop at Gara Rock for a well-earned coffee, cake, or even a leisurely lunch before heading back.

Soar Mill Cove and Back

If you’re looking for a slightly shorter but no less beautiful walk, Soar Mill Cove is the perfect spot. You can start from the National Trust car park at Soar and follow the path down towards this secluded sandy cove. It’s a wonderful place for a peaceful picnic or simply to sit and soak in the scenery. The walk back offers lovely views over the rolling hills, and in spring, you’ll spot plenty of lambs frolicking in the fields.

The Salcombe to Hope Cove Walk

For those keen to make a day of it, the walk from Salcombe to Hope Cove is a brilliant choice. Taking in dramatic cliffs, golden beaches, and some of the most picturesque stretches of the South West Coast Path, this route never fails to impress. Springtime wildflowers line the trails, and there’s always the reward of a drink or lunch at one of Hope Cove’s cosy pubs before catching the bus or walking back.

If you’re after something a little gentler but equally scenic, Snapes Point is a wonderful option. This walk provides fantastic panoramic views over the Salcombe Estuary, with boats bobbing on the water and pastel-coloured houses dotting the town. It’s a great route for a relaxed stroll with the family, and the fields nearby are often full of fresh spring blooms and birdsong.
